TRADITIONAL ARTISAN OF COCONUT SHELL CRAFT (BEST UNIT AWARD WINNER)

Profile of Artist:

Maya Mandal has completed a formal training in coconut shell craft for three years. After completing the professional training she made a unit where around 15 ladies work in making handicrafts and decorative item of these coconut shells. This is a versatile craft and the articles made out of coconut shells range from table lamps and finger bowls to boxes and even jewellery. Baskets and decorative traditional crafts of the Andaman Island are usually done by the women in their leisure time. Coconut shells in Andaman and Nicobar Island is in abundance and these coconut shell decorative and utility items are appreciated by the tourist as they are eco friendly items. Maya has won the Best Unit Award which shows the dedication of her team members.
